Gastronomy
Enogastronomy is very rich in this peninsula: one of the most typical products is Limoncello, the famous lemon liqueur; “provolone” cheese and the cheeses produced in Agerola and on Lattari mounts; salami of Vico Equense. We recommend a visit among the several producers of oil and wine: you will taste delicious products and enjoy wonderful panoramas, thanks to the mix between mountain and sea.

Gnocchi alla sorrentina

Ingredients: 4400 gr. mealy potatoes, 100 + 150 gr. flour, 1 egg, 50 gr. parmesan cheese, nutmeg
Preparation: put on the rolling-board 150 gr. of flour. Wash the potatoes and boil for about 10 minutes. Peel, when they are still hot and put them in a potato masher on the flour. Add egg , cheese and grated nutmeg. Knead, adding other flour on the rolling-board but not so much, otherwise it becomes gummy. Divide the kneading in 4 parts and on a floured surface roll the palm of the hands into one finger thick “sausage”, then cut into pieces of 2 cm. If you want, you can press them with a finger on the inside out of the grater or on a fork.

Sorrento is famous all over the world and it is celebrated by a famous traditional Neapolitan song. The sea is wonderful and Vesuvius dominates it. Sorrento is loved by tourists that visit Campania.
Sorrento is on a tuff rock created by several eruptions: it dominates the whole Gulf of Naples, the isles of Ischia and Capri. The ancient part of the town still keeps its Roman structure and the walls of 1500. The cathedral of XVI century is interesting, as well as the church dedicated to Saint Francis of Assisi and Correale museum where you will find findings that tell the story of Greek and Roman colonisers. In Marina Grande there is a picturesque anglers’ village.
If you visit Sorrento, you should enjoy a boat tour: the indented coasts have beautiful creeks and small hidden beaches. There are actual paradises for divers, for example near Punta Campanella.
Sorrento has a strategic position: it is near the sea towns Vico Equense and Massa Lubrense, whose hamlet Sant'Agata sui Due Golfi is famous because it looks over the gulfs, the one of Naples and the one of Salerno. Amalfi Coast is not far, so you can easily reach Positano, Amalfi and Ravello. You will also easily reach the archaeological excavations of Pompei, Ercolano and Stabiae.

To Visit......

An interesting itinerary would start from Corso Italia, where many Roman remains were discovered.  Corso Italia leads to Piazza Tasso, named after the poet who was born in Sorrento.  Walking along Via Correale one reaches the Museo Correale di Terranova, in a building donated by Giovanna d’ Angiò in 1428 to the Correale family who now manage the museum.  On the two floors of the museum one can admire Greek, Roman and Mediaeval finds, paintings which date from the 14th to the 19th centuries and also a collection of china from Italy and other European countries.
Piazza Tasso is the centre of Sorrento’s social activity.  In the square there is the statue of the patron saint, Sant’ Antonio and a monument dedicated to Torquato Tasso.  There is also the 14th century church of S.Maria del Carmine.  In Via Pietà, there is the magnificent Villa Fiorentino, which was built at the beginning of the last century.  Also worth mentioning are the Palazzo Verniero, with its Arab-Byzantine decorations, the ex Palazzo Correale with its adjoining Baroque church.  The Cathedral has ancient origins and was restructured many times from the 15th century onwards.
Of great architectural importance is the Palazzo Arcivescovile, while from the Via Sersale one can see the surrounding wall that was built by the inhabitants to defend themselves from pirates.  Sorrento’s sacred buildings are: la chiesa dell’ Annunziata; la Basilica di S. Antonio; la chiesa di Santa Maria delle Grazie; the 18th century church of San Francesco; the Monastero di S.Paolo, which dates back to the 9th century; the church of Santi Felice e Bacolo.
Not far from the latter is the house of the Fasulo family, on which one can read an epigraph dedicated to Torquato Tasso, who stayed here for a while in his sister, Cornelia Tasso’ s home.
Very particular are i Sedili di Sorrento: one of these, the Sedile Dominova, stands in Piazza Padre Reginaldo Giuliani and dates back to the 15th century while the other Sedile, called Porta, stands in Via S. Cesareo.
The town’s public gardens are very characteristic with their two busts: the first represents the Sorrento historian Bartolomeo Papasso;the other represents Judge Francesco Saverio Gargiulo.  The gardens boast a splendid view of the Golf of Naples from Procida to the Vesuvius.
From here, one can reach the beach of Marina Piccola.  From Piazza Gargiulo one can reach the maritime district of Marina Grande.  Furthermore, there are two interesting boat trips: travelling westwards one can reach a place where it is possible to visit the remains of the Roman Pollio Felice Villa; travelling eastwards one reaches the Grotta delle Sirene (the Mermaids’ Cave) in whose narrow gorges the sea acquires an extraordinary colour.
